Cell Phones, & Laptops, & iPods, Oh My!

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest“.  Matthew 11:28.

Society today is changing rapidly, and life seems to be moving at break-neck speed.  We have technology today that was scarcely imaginable just a few short years ago.  As a matter of fact, I am writing this on my laptop computer using a wireless connection.  When I hit enter, this post will be stored on a central web server hundreds, perhaps thousands, of miles away and available for reading to anyone in the world.  This process will take approximately 1-2 seconds!

I am not saying that technology is a bad thing; indeed, I use it everyday.  Technology has many advantages and useful applications.  This is why it was developed.  But it can have some negative consequences.

Many times we become overly dependent on what technology has to offer.  Can you imagine leaving your home without your cell phone?  For many this would cause some level of anxiety.  And for many teenagers today, life without instantly available music is a terrifying thought.  There is so much information on the internet now that books have been all but relegated to antiquity.

Technology is supposed to make our lives easier.  But all to often we become so tethered and dependent on it, our lives are made more stressful.  We become slaves to the very things that were supposed to give us more freedom.  We labor to keep up with the latest and greatest thing.

God teaches us in His Word that freedom and rest can only come through His Son, Jesus Christ.  It is God’s truth that will truly make us free.  It is our reliance on Him that will truly give us rest.  The burdens in this life can be great at times, and even Christians can become overwhelmed.  We must be careful not to let the devil deceive us into thinking that this world — with all its technology and advances — can provide us with the peace we seek.  While technology has its place, it can never substitute for the freedom and rest that faith and trust in our Lord Jesus Christ can bring.
