Pennies Make Dollars

“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:2.

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40.

My wife’s grandmother is fond of saying that “pennies make dollars.”  She grew up during the depression era when times were very difficult.  This saying clearly has a financial meaning.  But I believe it can also be applied to our spiritual lives.  Perhaps one could say that even the smallest of things can add up to greater things.

There are many times that we as Christians may feel that we have little to offer toward the Kingdom of God.  Perhaps we do not hold a leadership position in the church.  Perhaps we do not have the finances to help with various ministries.  The list could go on and on.  The simple fact is that God desires to use each of His children in a special and unique way.  He is not concerned with position or wealth.  The Lord is only concerned with our willingness to serve Him.

Unlike our Lord and Savior, we do not have the ability to see into the future; we are constrained in our knowledge.  But one thing I know for sure is that nothing done in Jesus’ name will go unrewarded.  No matter how small or insignificant we may think our contribution is, if it is done for the Lord it has Heavenly worth.

We are living in difficult times and many people are hurting and struggling.  But take heart Christians!  If we truly desire to please the Lord, He will give us the opportunity to serve Him.  Never think that there is anything too small to please God when it is done in His name.  We may never see the results of our efforts to serve the Lord on this Earth, and that is okay.  God sees our desire to serve Him in any task He gives us — no matter how insignificant we may think it is — and that is enough.

“There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?”  John 6:9.

Jesus took five loaves of bread and two small fish and fed a multitude of people.  I doubt that little lad knew that his seemingly insignificant contribution would be used so mightily by Jesus that day.  But that did not stop him, and Jesus used those small morsels to perform one of the greatest miracles in the Bible.
